Tesla’s Robotaxi Project Advances with Modified Model Y and Self-Cleaning Cameras
Tesla is quietly developing a fleet of modified Model Y vehicles at its Austin factory, specifically designed for its Robotaxi initiative. These specialized EVs feature self-cleaning cameras and additional protective measures to ensure clear vision—a critical requirement for Tesla’s vision-only autonomous driving system. A secondary telecommunications unit has been added to facilitate GPS coordination and remote operator connectivity.
Elon Musk confirmed earlier this year that remote human operators WOULD intervene during emergencies. Recent images from Tesla’s AI team reveal office setups with steering wheels, hinting at the infrastructure for remote control. The first Halo vehicles, equipped with the new camera technology, were deployed on June 22.
Unlike competitors relying on LiDAR or radar, Tesla’s Robotaxis depend entirely on cameras, making clarity and durability paramount. The company has publicly acknowledged its focus on maintaining unobstructed camera views, a key hurdle in achieving full autonomy.
